Goa Customs
Customs of GoaThe customs of Goa are a reflection of the unique Goan lifestyle. For centuries Hindus and Christians have co-existed peacefully in Goa and have preserved and nurtured their respective customs. Because of the long period of Portuguese rule, one can see their influence in every stratum of Goan life.
Despite being deeply religious people, the Goans are warm and liberal and believe in living life to the fullest. The Hindu majority of Goa has managed to uphold the traditional Hindu customs in spite of the atrocities of Inquisition. Some of Hinduism's most sacred temples are located in Goa and many of these shrines have their unique customs.
On the other hand, many of the customs observed by Christians in Goa have retained ingredients of Portuguese influence. Apart from the multitude of religious customs, the Goans also preserve general customs of showing respect to woman and revering religious shrines. Even though one can wear beachwear in the beaches, nudity is strictly prohibited.
