JAMMU & KASHMIR

Jammu - Jammu is situated on a hillock, on the bank of river Tawi and is bound by Udhampur district in the north and northeast, Kathua district in the east and southeast, Pakistan (Sialkote) in west and Rajauri district and POK (Bhimber) in the northwest. Its skyline was once dotted with glittering spires of temples. These spikes are no longer visible as most of these are hidden behind multi storied buildings. The city has numerous shrines for muslims, sikhs & Christians also. Jammu also serves as base camp for the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi. Jammu is also the Railhead of the state.

Srinagar - In the heart of the Kashmir valley, Srinagar spreads out on both sides of the Jhelum river. The valley's beauty has enticed visitors from distant lands. Srinagar bears the hallmark of the Mughals. Major attractions are - waterways with houseboats, handcrafted souvenirs and outdoor activities. 52 km away is Gulmarg - The country's premier winter-sport resort. In another direction lies Pahalgam, a place renowned for its natural beauty.

Gulmarg - A huge cup-shaped meadow, lush and green, with slopes where the silence is broken only by the tinkle of cow-bells, Gulmarg looks like a fantasy set in a film, and not surprisingly, has been the venue of several films. All around are snow capped mountains, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Nanga Parbat in one direction and Srinagar in another.

Patnitop

In recent times the place which has really come up as a tourist destination in J&K is Patnitop. This beautiful place is 112 km from Jammu. It is located on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. So access to this place is very easy. In fact Patnitop was a picnic spot for residents of Jammu. Later on it was taken up by JKTDC and developed as a tourist destination. JKTDC has provided this place with tourist facilities and is promoting this place in a big way. There are discount and special offers too. Patnitop is usually covered with snow during winter, thus providing a good opportunity for winter sports. The whole area is surrounded by thick forest. It situated on a plateau. Altitude of this place is 2024 meters from the sea level. The climate is cool through out the year. Patnitop with its peaceful walks and breathtaking views is an ideal place for honeymooners.
