Vilupuram District

Vilupuram is one of the thirty districts of Tamil Nadu, which situated in the southern part of India. Viluppuram district came into existence on 3oth September 1993 when it was created out of south of Arcot district. Kanayakumari Viluppuram city is the head quarter of the district.

History

From first to fourth centuries the Chola Empire were the rulers of Viluppuram. Then the sway of Pandyas lasted fifty years in Viluppuram, followed by Muslims rulers from the year 1334 to 1378. From 1378 onwards this place came under Vijayanagar Kingdom. Shivaji conquered Valippuram in the year 1667, but after that French and English ruled it. It remained under British India Company till the year 1947, when India got its freedom.

Geography

Valippuram district lies between 11° 38` 25"N and 12° 20` 44"S, 78° 15` 00" W and 79° 42` 55"E with an area of7222.03 hector. It was carved from the South Arcot district, which is now named as Cuddalore district. It was bounded on east and south by Cuddalore district. The west is bounded by Salem and Dharamapuri district. Thiruvannamalai and Kanchipuram district bound the north side of the Viluppuram.

Kanayakumari

Hilly areas are also bounding the Viluppuram district Most of the parts are surrounded by the Metamorphic rocks belongs to Genesis family. There are also three great groups sedimentary rocks belongs to different geological periods. Among the hills, the most beautiful part of the district lies around the Gingee hills.

Pennaiyar is the principal river of Valippuram. The other rivers are Komingi, Mani muktha,Kedilam, Malattar, Sankaraparani and Varaganathi. There is no heavy rainfall in this district . It is upto 1030 mm, through out the year. Valippuram`s climate is sub tropical. Maximum tempreture is 37 degree and mimimum tempreture is 21 degree.

Economy Kanayakumari

The chief foods of the valippuram district are Paddy, Cholam, Ragi, Cumbu, Red gram, Black gram, Horse gram, and varage. The chief cash corps is Sugarcane, Groundnut, Cotton, Casuarina, and Coconut.

Valippuram district has a coastal length about 32 kilometers in venur and Marakanam blocks in Bay of Bengal. Where fishing is the main source of livlihood of people. for proper organisation there are cooperative societies and also one fish net making unit in venur bank. There are 18 brackish water aquaculture forms in the district. Those make limits on the scope for inland fisheries in the district . Inland fishing is mostly carried on tanks and reservoirs owned by PWD.

Seri culture is under taken by most of the sectors in the district. Department of agriculture has providing disease free silk worm eggs to the farmers and provide training to them in mulberry cultivation and rearing of cocoons.

Sugar Industry is the main industry in Valippuram. There are four sugar factories in the district. There are also few small industries like 67 Rice Mills, 17 Sago factories, 5 Rice bran oil exacting companies and eight Cotton ginning mills are running in the district.

In valippuram there are 34 Handlooms co-operative societies are existing. Out of which 26 societies are functioning and 2000 workers are engaging through it.

Government and Politics

A collector, who is belonging to an officer of Indian Administrative Service, is the head of the Valippuram District. The Superintendent of police, an officer belonging to the Indian Police Service, is responsible for the maintaining law and order and related issues in the district.

A district Revenue officer is also appointed for the collection of revenues from the different localities of Valippuram.

Division

Viluppuram district comprises of 1409 revenue villages, four Revenue divisions, Eight Administrative Talukas, 22 blocks, 15 town Panchayat unions, 1104 Gram Panchayats and 3 municipalities.

Demographics

As per 2001 Census, Viluppuram district has a population of 2,960,373. The Males account for 1,492,442 and Female`s is 1,467,931.This district is listed as the first most backward district in Tamil Nadu. It is only 14.42% urbanized. It`s litaeracy rate is 64.68%, the second lowest in the state.

Culture Kanayakumari

The major festivals of the district are, Pongal, which is a four days festival, celebrated as harvesting festivals. Diwali is also an important festival of South Indians. The mid of the April is celebrated as Tamil New year. Valippuram people also celebrate Dussehra, Vinayak Chaturthi and Holi. Tourist places of Viluppuram

Valippuram has temples, mosques, churches which are very old and famous.

Gingee Fort, is located on the either side of the road to T.V.Malai.

Fortification Wall- the massive portification walls of Gingee interconnect the three inaccessible hills- Krishnagiri, Chakkilidurg and Rajagiri. The three hills are disported in the form of triangle, while the main wall connecting to them is 20 meters thick.

Kalyana Mahal- This Mahal is built in Indo Islamic style. It consists of a square court, surraounded by rooms for the ladies of the governor house hold.

Venugopala Swamy Temple- located to the west of the inner gate of the lower citadel, the temple contains a remarkable sculpture depicting Lord Krishna playing on the flute with two concerts.

The Hanuman temple and its two famous ponds, named as Chakkarakulam and Chettikulam. The famous Rangannatha temple.

Sad-At-Ullah Khan Mosque# - it is located at the entrance of the inner fort of Rajagiri.

Kamalakkanni Amman Temple- this small shrine dedicated to Goddess Kamalakkanni Amman or Durga., a local deity, is found in the way to the citadel on Rajgiri Hill.

Thiruvaamathoor- this is an ancient Chola temple, which is dedicated to Lord

Abiramaeshwarar.It is 1500 years old temple.

Thumpoor temple- this is 1450-year-old temple of lord Nagamman.

Esalam Temple- This 1012 years old temple is built by king Rajendra Chola. This temple is dedicated to lord Sri Ramanatha Eswarar.

Pachchaiamman temple

Theerathangarargul-It is 2 kilometers north of Gingee town.

Melmalayanur-this temple of Angala Parameswari is 32 kilometers from Gingee. The special deity of the Sembadavaras. Every year festivals are arranging during February and March.

Thirukkoilur-It is situated on the Cuddalore-Chttoor trunk road and 37 kilometer away from Vilippuram

Kalrayan Hills-it is famous for several waterfalls. It is also called poor man`s hill station of Tamil Nadu. Here every year district

Administration is conducting the Summer festval to creat awareness among the tribes.

Mayilam- in Mayilam there is a famous temple located named Arulmigu Subramaniya Swami Temple.

Thiruvakkarai- it is a geological park, which is about 40 kilometer from Villupuram and 25 kilometers from Pondicherry.

Thiruvennainallur-It is 20 kilometer from Villupuram on the Thirukkoilur road.

Marakanam Beach- it is 22 kilometer from Pondicherry across East Cost Road in Vanur taluk.
