Kancheepuram district
The city is the house of thousand temples. Kancheepuram district is situated on the northern East Coast of Tamil Nadu and is adjacent by Bay of Bengal and Chennai city. This district is bounded in the west by Vellore and Thiruvannamalai district, in the north by Thiruvallur district and Chennai district, in the south by Villuppuram district in the east by Bay of Bangal. It lies between 11° 00` to 12° 00` North latitudes and 77° 28` to 78° 50` East longitudes. The district has a total geographical area of 4,43,210 hectares and coastline of 57 Kms. Kancheepuram is the district headquarter as well.
To maintain administrative circle, the district has been divided into 3 revenue divisions comprising of 8 taluks with 1214 revenue villages. For development reasons, it is divided into 13 development blocks with 648 Village Panchayats.

Population: with an area of 7857.00 Sq Kms Kancheepuram has a total population of 30.38 lakh. This population is the 6.76% of the total state population.
Total area of the district recorded as 7857.00 sq.kms. Out of which net sown area is 3107.44 sq. kms., net irrigation area is 2435.27 sq. kms. and total forest area is 426.57 sq. kms.
The literacy rate of the district can be mentioned in percentage as 66.38%. out of which male literacy is 77.07% and female literacy is 55.22%.
Climate: The summer season experiences a maximum of 36.6° C and a minimum of 21.1° C while in Winter season the temperature is 28.7° C as maximum and 19.8° C as minimum temperature.
Rainfall:The rainfall that comes before monsoon is almost uniform throughout the district. The coastal taluks get more rains rather than the interior regions. This district is mainly depended on the seasonal rains. Northeast and Southwest monsoon give the most rainfall with 54% and 36% contribution each to the total annual rainfall. The normal rainfall is recorded as 1213.3 mm while actual rainfall is recorded as 1133.0 mm.
Agriculture: Agriculture is regarded as the main occupation in this district. A huge population is engaged in it. Out of the total population 47% are engaged in this profession. Paddy is the major crop cultivated in this district. Groundnuts, Sugarcane, Cereals & Millets and Pulses are the other major crops cultivated here. There are different types of soils present in the district. Some of them can be mentioned, as Read Loam is present in Kancheepuram and Uthiramerur blocks, Lateritic soil is present on plateau in the district black soil is spread in all blocks. The other type is sandy coastal Alluviam. This is present in some places like Thirukazhukundram, Thiruporur, and St. Thomas Mount. Red Sandy Soil is present in Kancheepuram and Urban blocks.
Total cropped area is 198543 Hec. While net area sown is 160090 Hec and area sown more than once is 38453 Hec.
Forest:The total forest area in the district is 23,586 hectares. The forest area is spread in the interior regions and also around the district. In this forest area there are 366.675 hectares Reserved Land. 76.50 Metric Tonnes Fuelwood is cultivated and 8.039 Tonnes Cashew is also cultivated.
Rivers:The Palar River is one of the most important rivers running through the district. Tanks and wells are the main sources of irrigation in this district. There is as such no water scarcity in the district. People live happily with the proper irrigation system.
Hills:There are only a few hills present in the district. These hills are of considerable elevation in the district. The southern part of Maduranthakam taluk contains small hills. These also provide a scenic beauty.
