Erode district
Erode district is a prominent district in the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the bank of the river Cauvery in the northern part of the state. It is surrounded by the Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul district, Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts. Spread over an area of 8,169 sq.km. Erode was part of the former Kongunadu region of ancient Madras. The major rivers flowing through the district are Bhavani, Cauvery, Amaravathi and Noyyal. Palar River flows in the north part of the district and the Vatamalaikarai odapi and Uppar Rivers in the south. The district is landlocked and is situated between 10 36" and 11 58" north latitude and between 76 49" and 77 58" east longitude.
The district has a hot and dry climate and receives an annual rainfall of over 100mm. The district is well known for its handloom and power loom textile industry and also called the power loom city of India. The other important industries in the district are cotton textiles, vanaspati manufacturing, screen-printing, turmeric farming and processing, preparation of bread and coach bodybuilding. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy and along with rice other crops grown here are millets, cereals, pulses, sugarcane, groundnut and cotton. Turmeric is an important crop cultivated in the district and is also an important business center for turmeric. The district also has rich mineral deposits of quartz, feldspar, black granite, colour granite, rough stone and sand.
Bannari Amman Temple Erode had a population of 2,581,500 and a literacy rate of 75.51% according to the 2001 census report.
The Bhavani Sangameshwar Temple, Bannari Amman Temple, Bird Sanctuary at Vellore, Periyar Memorial House and Hill temples of Lord Muruga on Sivanmalai, Chennimalai, Thindalmalai and Vattamalai are some of the major tourist attractions.
