GOVERNMENT STATE MUSEUM (***)
The two main galleries in this museum display sculptures from Amravati and bronze sculptures. Closed: Fridays and public holidays. Tel:8193238. Entry: Free, Rs. 10 for Indians, $ 5 fro other. Timings: 9.30 a.m to 5.00 p.m.
FORT ST. GEORGE MUSEUM
An impressive collection of portraits and paintings of former governors of Chennai as well as British royalty. Weapons, coins, porcelain and communion vessels of the church are also on display. Tel: 5671127. Entry Fee: Rs. 5 for Indian, $ 2 or Rs. 100 for others. Timings: 10.00 a.m to 5.00 p.m.
DAKSHINACHITRA
Tradition houses of various communities of South Indian have been transported brick by brick and reconstructed at this “heritage centre” on the coast off Chennai. Displayed in this museum are authentic samples of architecture, arts and crafts from the four South Indian states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
SILPPATHIKARA ART GALLERY
Scenes from Silappathikaram, the epic of the land, have been given lively shapes in stone in the walls if the gallery. Timings: 8.30 a.m to 1.00 p.m and 2.30 p.m to 8.30 p.m.
